It's time to de-bunk The Top 5 Nutrition Myths.
#1. All Carbs are created equal.
Some websites and even some doctors may suggest that all carbohydrates are equal and have the same impact on blood sugar; this is not true.
Carbohydrates vary considerably in how quickly they are converted to blood sugar in your body.
Therefore, carbohydrates vary in how much they cause your blood sugar to rise, too.
Complex carbohydrates have minimal impact on blood sugar (for example, dietary fiber.) Simple carbohydrates quickly cause blood sugar to spike (like table sugar.)
Two good tools that tell how a food will impact blood sugar are "Net carbs" and the Glycemic Index.
Extend Nutrition Snacks are made with unique, Low Glycemic, complex carbohydrates. Based on clinically conducted continuous glucose monitoring, the Extend formula converts to blood sugar slowly for 6 to 9 hours!
#2. Cut out carbohydrates in order to lose weight.
The main idea behind low-carbohydrate diets is that carbohydrates promote insulin production, which in turn causes weight gain. Therefore, by reducing carbohydrate intake you can lose weight. It turns out, this line of thinking is also a nutritional myth!
To lose weight, the calories you burn from physical activity must exceed the calories you consume from food.
Many low-carb dieters experience weight loss because they have reduced their calorie consumption.
Certain carbohydrates can actually help you lose weight!
Complex, Low Glycemic, carbohydrates convert to blood sugar slowly and evenly which helps keep your energy levels balanced, so you will feel fuller for longer between meals.
Extend Snacks are made with unique complex, Low Glycemic, carbohydrates, which digest slowly in your system - slower than any other snacks available. This helps prevent low blood sugar - which is a trigger of appetite.
With Extend Snacks, you get healthy carbohydrates that help control hunger - without overloading on calories.
#3. Sugar causes diabetes.
This is a common myth that simply is not true!
There is no single cause for diabetes; regardless of whether it is Type 1, Type 2, or Pre-Diabetes.
The main risk factors for Type 2 are being overweight, living a sedentary lifestyle, and eating a diet high in calories. Type 1 Diabetes occurs when the pancreas no longer produces insulin.
If you have diabetes, you do need to watch your sugar and carbohydrate intake to manage your blood sugar levels; but, sugar does not cause diabetes.
Extend Nutrition Snacks are made with little or no sugar (0-3g per serving) and complex carbohydrates which help minimize the impact on blood sugar levels.
#4. Skipping meals can help people lose weight.
Many people think that by skipping a meal, they will eat less food and, therefore, lose weight. This too turns out to be a nutrition myth!
There are, at least, 3 very good reasons not to skip a meal:
First, because food is fuel for our bodies you'll start to feel ravenous if you skip a meal. Then, when you do finally eat, you're more likely to overeat which can cause you to gain weight.
Second, your body may go into "starvation mode" which lowers your metabolic rate and encourages the body to produce and store fat - this can also cause weight gain.
Third, skipping a meal can cause your blood sugar levels to swing unpredictably.
It is better to stabilize your blood sugar and keep it within a healthy range.
What if you have to miss a meal? We recommend eating a nutritional snack that contains around 15-20g of complex carbohydrate along with nutrients like protein, fiber, and healthy fat. Extend Snacks can fill this gap beautifully!
Extend Shakes make a great breakfast or quick "lunch on the go". Plus, Extend Drizzles, Extend Bars and Extend Crisps can easily be stored in your purse or glove compartment - for those unexpected times when you're running late and need a quick snack.
#5. Avoid all fats, because any fat is bad!
The fact is, we actually need healthy fats and should only avoid unhealthy fats (like Trans fats and excess saturated fats.)
Fats help with nutrient absorption and nerve transmission. They also help maintain cell membrane integrity and a small amount of healthy fat is good for metabolism.
The key is to replace bad fats (trans fats and saturated fats) with good fats (monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats). Extend Snacks are made with an optimal blend of carbohydrate, lean protein, dietary fiber, and a small amount of healthy fat!
